The CipherSquad stepped out in full force this past month to offer assistance to Uhambo Africa, an organisation whose mission is to build a world class, sustainable school support system that integrates the children, parents and teachers.
Uhambo’s journey began in 2012 when they identified and adopted a school in Diepsloot – Muzomuhle Primary School. They are currently focused on working with Grade 3 children who are pupils at the school, with the goal of expanding their outreach to all children. The CipherSquad banded together to offer assistance to Uhambo as tutors for English.
True to form, the team rose to the occasion by splitting into groups of two, with each group tutoring a class of up to 36 children. In total we had six classrooms of eager children learning the basics of English and spelling.
The experience was a deeply affecting one for all involved as it highlighted the need for proper education for those less fortunate than ourselves. These children are so passionate about learning, which was evident in their enthusiasm and excitement to be involved in everything from spelling tests, comprehension lessons and even exhilarating rounds of hangman!
The charity also provides each child with food and drink at the end of the morning, along with some food to take back to their families. This worthwhile cause is open to all who wish to volunteer their help. Classes take place most Saturdays at the school from 9am – 12pm.
